Monthly Musings which invite your thoughtful reflection
By John Gantt, Interim Conference Minister
Friends in and around the Ohio Conference:
In our first Tuesday of each month Connections newsletter, I plan to share a “musing” titled as you see above. It will be also an invitation to you to join me in conversation about that “musing.”
Let’s start with peace. General Synod invites us to re-engage in a determination made 30 years ago to focus on the concept of “just peace.”
It sure would be nice to have just a little more peace and quiet!
That would be a plea for just PEACE. The General Synod resolution, however, is about JUST peace. That takes us past the quest for personal calm and comfort into a confrontation with Matthew 5:9 or maybe Ephesians 4:3. It links scripture with comments like Jane Addams’ remark: “True peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of justice” and with chanters who shout “No Justice. No peace.”
So today I wondered what took place in our congregations on JUST PEACE Sunday September 18? And, what’s been happening since?
There are many resources available. Check out http://www.ucc.org/just_peace_sunday_resources.
At least seven congregations in the Ohio Conference declare themselves to be JUST PEACE congregations. Will you share how you are living into that theology?
The beatitude stresses making peace. How does that play out in congregational and community life around you?
Share your comments with me below. I hope to hear from you.
